The wheels of justice are once again on a mission to deliver justice in real time to the most vulnerable persons of society, especially those in desperate situations, as the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Katarungan Caravan makes a stop at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City.

In a bid to bring essential government services closer to the people, the DOJ through the DOJ Action Center, collaborated with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) led by Rizal-San Juan-Mandaluyong President Atty. Manuel Joseph B. Ibañez III, volunteers from the Office of the Government Corporate Counsel (OGCC), Legal Aid Society of the Philippines, Philippine Law School (PLS) professors and their students, and other private individuals, to render free legal services to women persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).

Most of the legal concerns of women PDLs are their Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) computations, possible parole and executive clemency, the routing of matters intended for other government agencies, drafting of appeals and legal communications, internal requests and other legal concerns. A portion of the PDLs served were terminally ill and elderly women who have spent years behind bars.

“We are the lawyers of the people, go and lead the way in bringing positive change in the lives of others by delivering justice for all without fear or favor,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” C. Remulla averred

The DOJ’s Katarungan Caravan is under the direct supervision of DOJAC Undersecretary-in-Charge Margarita N. Gutierrez who has successfully led a series of service caravans across the nation in an effort to bridge the gaps between the government and the people, ensuring the efficient delivery of vital government services at the public’s convenience along with Program Director Assistant State Prosecutor Joan Carla Guevarra.

The DOJ vows to intensify service caravan projects like these as the holiday season nears.##
