Death row survivor and Filipino compatriot Mary Jane Veloso is finally home, just in time for Christmas after years of incarceration in a foreign land.
Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Catapang, Jr. personally flew to Indonesia Monday night to fetch Veloso.
Catapang met with Indonesian officials on Tuesday to arrange Veloso’s flight.
Upon arrival to the Philippines, Veloso was escorted immediately to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) and placed under its custody.
Veloso’s return will pave the way for the filing of charges against her alleged recruiters.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” C Remulla welcomed this positive development on Veloso’s return so she could be with her family during the holiday season.
“Let me take this opportunity to extend the PH government’s warmest appreciation for this act of compassion displayed by our international partner, the Indonesian government. Your act of mercy speaks volumes,” Secretary Remulla said.
Veloso will continue to serve her sentence in the Philippines under the transfer agreement signed between the Philippines and Indonesia with no conditions imposed by the Indonesian government.##
