Philippines Convicts Australian National

11 October 2024

An Australian national was found guilty of two (2) counts of Qualified Trafficking and one (1) count of Trafficking in Persons under Republic Act No. 9208, as amended. The court sentenced the accused to two (2) life terms and an additional 20 years imprisonment. In addition to the jail sentence, the accused was ordered to pay a total fine of 5 million pesos.

In 2014, the accused lured his minor victims by offering them food outside a shopping mall, where they were living as street children. Once inside his home, the accused forced the victims to engage in sexual acts and pose nude, which he recorded and broadcasted for online customers. The victims were rescued by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after a concerned citizen reported the cybersex operation being run by the accused.

In February 2024, the Australian national was also found guilty of the crime of rape, as defined and penalized under Article 266-A of the Revised Penal Code, and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The IACAT warmly congratulates Senior Assistant State Prosecutors Jinky Dedumo and Wendell Bendoval for leading the successful prosecution of the Australian national, hailing the conviction as a significant victory in the Philippines' ongoing battle against Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC). The IACAT also commends the intensified efforts of Philippine law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in combating OSAEC, ensuring that offenders are held accountable.

The country remains steadfast in its commitment to protect its children from exploitation and abuse, sending a powerful message that such crimes will not be tolerated within its borders.
