Guided by the principles of the Bagong Pilipinas brand of governance, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" C. Remulla, along with the Philippine delegation led by First Lady (FL) Liza Araneta-Marcos, took utmost pride and honor in representing our country in the World Governments Summit (WGS) this year held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
For the Department of Justice (DOJ), the main highlight of the event was the signing of various treaties with UAE involving matters such as Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), extradition and transfer of sentenced persons.
SOJ Remulla signed on behalf of the Philippines while the UAE justice minister was his counterpart as witnessed by FL Marcos.
Themed "Shaping Future Governments", the 3-day WGS from 11-13 February 2025 convened different heads of governments across the world, international organizations, thought leaders from both public and private sectors around the globe.
This endeavor aims to champion international cooperation by guiding governments in laying out a feasible working plan to form innovative solutions for future challenges in leadership and governance, ultimately inspiring and empowering the next generation of State leaders.
More importantly, the Summit serves as a platform in gathering prominent leaders, policy makers and experts around the globe to address critical global challenges, such as access to justice, poverty and hunger.
Last but definitely not the least, the event also paved the way for the signing by other government agencies like DBM, DSWD and DMW of Memorandum of Agreements (MOAs) which target their respective mandates to advance the mutual prosperity of both the Philippines and the UAE.
"The Philippines and the UAE have long shared a deep and enduring relationship, with over 600,000 Filipinos contributing the UAE's economy and society. These agreements reinforce our mutual trust, ensuring that our legal frameworks not only protect our citizens but also uphold the principles of justice and fairness," Secretary Remulla highlighted.
"Today's signing is not just a legal milestone, it is a testament to what nations can achieve when they choose cooperation over division, justice over impunity, and partnership over isolation," the Secretary added.
Since its inception in 2013 under the leadership of Dubai leader Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the WGS has engaged a total of 140 countries.
